ERAWAEB / DIGEST / ISSUE #001

The "free trial"
that wasn't.

Issue #001 — September 14, 2026. The one that started it all.

THE BE AWARE DIGEST ISSUE #001 — SEP 14, 2026

THE STORY

The "free trial" that wasn't.

Somewhere right now, a free trial you forgot about just became a $14.99/month subscription. Trials that convert silently aren't a bug — they're the business model. Companies count on you forgetting; the "cancel" button is always three menus deeper than the "start trial" button was.

The move: the moment you start a trial, set a reminder for the day before it ends. Two minutes now beats an hour on hold later. Want the full defense system? Read the Trial Traps guide.

THE SCAM

The package you never ordered.

"Your package couldn't be delivered — reschedule here." The text looks urgent, the link looks official. But carriers don't text you links out of nowhere, and the page it opens is built to harvest your address, your card number, or both. This one runs constantly because it works on pure reflex: everyone orders packages, everyone fears missing one.

The move: never tap the link. Open the carrier's app or website yourself, type in the tracking number, and check there. If there's no tracking number in the message, there was never a package.

WORTH KNOWING

Freeze your credit in ten minutes.

A credit freeze is free under federal law and stops anyone from opening accounts in your name — including you, until you lift it. You set it up once at each of the three bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Each one takes a few minutes online. It doesn't hurt your credit score, and you can temporarily lift it whenever you actually apply for something.

The move: do all three tonight. Ten minutes of boring paperwork is the cheapest identity-theft insurance there is.

Real issues. Real signal. Every night.
