THE STORY
The checkout that shopped for you.
You came for one thing. Somehow your cart has four. Welcome to dark patterns: pre-checked "add protection" boxes, "sneak-into-basket" extras, countdown timers that reset when they hit zero, and a cancel button buried three menus deep. None of this is accidental — every pixel is A/B tested to separate you from a few more dollars.
The move: slow down at checkout. Uncheck everything you didn't ask for. Read the order summary line by line, and screenshot the final total before you pay. If a site makes it hard to say no, that's your answer about the site.
THE SCAM
The job that pays you to do tasks.
A recruiter messages you out of nowhere: easy remote work, great pay. The "work" is liking videos or rating products. The money shows up in your account dashboard — you can see it! Then comes the catch: to withdraw your earnings, you need to deposit your own money first to "unlock" a higher tier. The dashboard was fake. Your deposit is gone. The recruiter is gone.
The move: real jobs pay you. They never charge you to get paid. Any job that asks you to deposit money, buy crypto, or pay a "training fee" to start working is not a job — it's the scam.
WORTH KNOWING
Your phone number is the key to your bank.
SIM-swapping: a thief convinces your carrier to move your number to their SIM card. Suddenly your calls, your texts — and your two-factor login codes — go to them. From there it's your email, then your bank. It starts with a phone call to customer support and ends with an emptied account.
The move: put a PIN or passcode on your carrier account today, so nobody can make changes without it. Then switch your important logins from text-message codes to an authenticator app. Texts can be rerouted. Your app can't.
