THE BE AWARE DIGEST DAILY RED FLAG #019 — OCT 1, 2026

THE SCAM

The tax credit that doesn't exist.

Promoters are going around selling something called “Tribal Tax Credits” — also billed as “Native American Tax Credits” or “Sovereign Tribal Tax Credits.” The pitch: buy these credits from an organization supposedly connected with a tribal community, put them on your federal return, and watch your tax bill shrink or turn into a big refund. They wrap it in tribal names, official-sounding agreements, and high-pressure sales tactics promising a huge return on your money. The IRS just said it straight: no such federal tax credit exists. Not under those names, not under any name close to them. The money you pay for the credits is real; the credits are not.

THE RED FLAG

Watch for the secret-credit pitch. “A tax credit most preparers don’t know about” is the tell — there is no tax credit that only one promoter has heard of. Real tax law is public: every genuine credit is written up on the IRS website with a form number and rules anyone can read. If the deal needs urgency, official-sounding names, and paperwork you can’t verify anywhere official, they’re not selling you a discount on your taxes. They’re selling you the liability that comes after.

THE RULE

Before you sign anything, look the credit up on IRS.gov yourself. If you can’t find it in the IRS’s own words, it doesn’t exist — walk away. Remember: you own everything on your return, even the parts someone else filled in. A return claiming one of these fake credits is a false claim in the IRS’s eyes, even if a refund was paid out first. And if you already claimed one, talk to a real tax professional about it — not the person who sold it to you.
